MediaTek Senior Standards Specialist Johan Johansson Elected to Lead 3GPP RAN2 Working Group

The new role with RAN2 will see Johansson spearhead the standardization of 5G technologies

MediaTek today announced that Johan Johansson, Senior Standards Specialist at MediaTek, has been elected as the Chairman of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) RAN Working Group 2.

As the world’s most prominent mobile technology standards organization, 3GPP was responsible for the development of some of the most popular mobile technologies in the modern telecommunications, including GSM (2G), WCDMA (3G), LTE (4G) and NR (5G).

A long-term advocate for telecommunications technology standardization, MediaTek is honored to receive the recognition and grateful for the support the RAN2 Working Group has extended to the company. In his new role, Johansson will endeavor to finalize Rel-16 and contribute to the standardization work of future releases.

According to 3GPP’s roadmap, over the next year, the RAN2 Working Group will focus its efforts on developing L2/L3 protocols for Rel-17, which is expected to have improved support for eMBB (Enhanced Mobile Broadband). It will also include additional functionality that supports mMTC (Mass Machine Communication) and URLLC (Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications), two other major use cases of 5G, and enable new market opportunities in mobile broadband and emerging IoT applications.

Since 2009, MediaTek has been actively working in close collaboration with 3GPP to promote standardization. In the time between the launch of 4G networks and now, MediaTek has quadrupled its number of published technical papers, amassing great expertise in core 5G technologies. MediaTek’s long-term and extensive contribution to the industry is highly recognized by its industry counterparts, and since 2015 MediaTek has been hosting various technical meetings for 3GPP.

Prior to his current role within the Working Group, Johansson was elected as the Vice Chairman of 3GPP RAN2 in 2017. Moving forward, MediaTek will continue to work with global telecommunications partners to drive the evolution of 5G and post-5G technologies.
