Globe makes internet accessible in disadvantaged areas with new network builds

Globe now covers 96.13% of the Philippine population with its mobile network. Based on the 2020 population tally, that's over 106 million people who can rely on mobile signals for calls, internet access, and daily communication. Despite this, around 4.2 million Filipinos still remain outside the coverage areas. These are Filipinos who live in remote towns situated in  barely inhabited islands, mountainous regions, or places where terrain and lack of basic infrastructure like electricity have made it difficult to put up digital infrastructure. Reaching these people really poses a challenge.

“There is still much work to be done to bring quality connectivity to every Filipino. Globe remains fully committed to making it happen,” said Joel Agustin, SVP for Network Planning and Engineering.

Globe warns customers vs fraudsters pretending to be NTC officials

Globe is warning its customers against a new vishing or voice phishing scam where fraudsters pretend to be officials of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

In this new scheme, scammers call potential victims claiming that their phone number has been linked to illegal activities. The fraudsters would then extort money from their targets, threatening to arrest them if they do not cooperate.

“Criminals prey on our natural respect for authority, using it as a weapon to deceive and manipulate. This is what we see in this new scam modus, where fraudsters pretend to be NTC officials. We call on our customers to be very vigilant and do not fall victim to these scammers,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief Information Security Officer.

Globe sees rise in cable theft cases in Greater Manila Area in H1 2024

Seeks closer collaboration with gov’t agencies, LGUs, police for unified front

Globe has reported an 18.6% increase in cable theft incidents in the Greater Manila Area (GMA) in the first half of 2024, a concerning uptrend that undermines efforts to expand connectivity amid steadily increasing demand.

From January to June 2024, Globe logged 906 cases of cable theft, a significant rise from 764 cases during the same period in 2023. June had the highest number of cases this year at 169 incidents.

Hotspot areas include Quezon City, where theft incidents affected Globe’s cable segments in Aurora, Project 8 and Roosevelt. Cables within the Las Piñas, Makati and Manila are also among those frequently targeted.

GMA accounted for about 61.55% percent of the total 1,472 cases logged nationwide in the first half of this year, reflecting a worrying trend of rising cable theft in the metropolis. This escalation poses a serious challenge to Globe's efforts to enhance and expand its network across the region.
