Globe has received reports that its sender ID has been used to spread a malicious message apparently targeting the President’s family or prominent political figures.

Globe wishes to clarify that the said message is a case of spoofing, where fraudsters send unauthorized SMS with a spoofed sender ID to mobile users in a particular area using fake cell towers.

Spoofing uses an international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) catcher– a portable  device that captures mobile users within a limited radius by forcing their signal to downgrade to 2G, the old cellular network technology for voice calls and texts.  Messages sent via spoofing do not pass through the Globe cellular network, thus bypassing Globe’s stringent anti-fraud filters.

Globe starts blocking AI-generated, CGI, animated child sexual abuse imagery

Globe, a staunch advocate for online safety, has started blocking non-photographic imagery (NPI) of child sexual abuse– those made using artificial intelligence, computer-generated imagery (CGI), animation, cartoon, drawings and other non-live methods– as it ramps up measures against malicious content.

From August 27 to September 27 this year, its first month of implementing this measure, the network blocked 343 URLs and 16 domains containing NPI flagged by its partner Internet Watch Foundation.

The IWF has been at the forefront of combating NPI, recognizing its potential to cause significant harm to viewers and its illegal status in many jurisdictions.  On its website, the IWF said even accidental viewing of child sexual abuse material, even those made with CGI or cartoons, “can cause lasting damage for the person who stumbled upon it.”

Globe reiterates public warning against SMS spoofing, calls for increased vigilance

Globe renews its call for the public to exercise vigilance against SMS spoofing, a sophisticated scam tactic that has seen a resurgence in recent months, with fraudsters using names of reputable organizations to take advantage of customers’ trust.

Spoofing involves fraudsters impersonating legitimate SMS sender IDs, including Globe and other organizations, to trick recipients into believing that the messages are authentic. This technique has become increasingly prevalent, particularly in Metro Manila, despite the implementation of SIM registration last year aimed at curbing SMS fraud.

Customers have reported receiving spoofed messages that mimic Globe's sender ID, enticing them with fraudulent links or else hooking them with claims of account problems. These deceptive messages aim to steal personal and sensitive information, which can grant scammers access to online accounts such as social media profiles, e-wallets, and bank accounts.
